Frequently Asked Questions
We normally start at 10am but can sometimes offer earlier slots – just ask. You need to return with the boat at least 1 hour before sunset. We are open throughout the year but to avoid disappointment, please get in touch before you make plans and don’t just turn up!
We seek to offer a tranquil, stress-free experience and for that reason we do not impose time limits on the activity. Most people would spend between 2 and 3 hours out on the river.
Our activity is on the river Thouet, a tributary of the Loire Valley, the two rivers converging just to the west of Saumur. We are based at La Motte, a hamlet within Artannes sur Thouet. From here you can take a boat upstream towards Montreuil-Bellay. We do not offer downstream trips as its usually impossible to paddle back upstream. Our address details are at the bottom of this (and every) page.
Sure! During the summer there are usually a few sandy beaches you can picnic on!
Yes – depending on the size of the dog, you can take it with you in specific canoes. This needs to be agreed in advance.
It is compulsory that all participants wear a floatation aid (not strictly a life-jacket). We provide these in sizes from small children up to adult (80+kg). If you have a small infant in your group we will advise whether we have something to fit or whether you will need to bring your own. We don’t provide them for dogs
Boating on any water is never without risk. We have rules that help to minimise the risks, but ultimately once you set-off you are on your own and are responsible for your own safety. Rest-assured the Thouet is known as “The Tranquil River” because it is very calm. In normal circumstances you are not going to encounter any danger – indeed this part of the Thouet is much safer than the Loire. We will brief you on any potential issues before you set-off.
The most likely exposure to a risk is going to be your own irresponsible behaviour.
Must haves: ID, means of payment, adequate amounts of water, (sun cream – weather specific)
Optional: Picnic, snacks, alternative footwear, towel, phone protection.
In normal use, the only water that will enter the boat is drips from the paddles.
We can provide a small water-proof container, big enough for phones and keys but not something you are going to get a banquet in nor a change of clothes. If you want to take luggage with you you will need a bag!
There are no guarantees but we have seen over 80 species of bird! If you are quiet and reasonably observant you would expect to see egrets, herons, kingfishers, night-herons, bitterns and wagtails – it does depend on the season too! Find out more…
Unless you manage to get to Montreuil-Bellay, there are no “facilities” of any sort along the river. If you think you might “need to go” best to address the need before you arrive here!
